Global installed PV capacity grew by 13 GW in first half of 2012, 18 GW expected in second half

23.08.2012: More than 13 GW of new photovoltaic (PV) capacity was added globally in the first six months of 2012, according to the latest quarterly report from IMS Research. The Americas market saw significant growth in the period, growing 120% year on year to reach 1.7 GW of new capacity. “The Americas market, led by the USA was unseasonably strong in the first half and did not show any significant slowdown resulting from the anti-dumping duties,” said IMS Research PV Director Ash Sharma. The report found that Germany was still the world’s largest PV market; however, IMS Research forecasts that the European market as a whole will shrink by nearly 3 GW in 2012 due to fewer opportunities in Germany and Italy. IMS Research predicts that 18 GW of PV will be added globally in the second half of 2012, driven by demand in China, Japan and the US. The US is expected to become the third largest PV market in 2012, with at least 3.5 GW of new PV capacity added. The US added about 1.8 GW of PV last year. … Source: IMS Research; Summary: PHOTON
