CA on track for 33% of power from Renewables

California utilites are on track to achieve goal of 33% renewable energy by 2020

01.08.2012: The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) reports that the state’s three investor-owned utilities (IOUs) obtained 20.6% of their electricity from renewable energy sources in 2011, up from 17% in 2010. Last year, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. served 20.1% of its retail sales with renewable energy, Southern California Edison with 21.1% and San Diego Gas & Electric with 20.8%. California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) program requires the state’s three IOUs to obtain 33% of electricity sold to retail customers from renewable resources by the end of 2020. According to the CPUC, 2,871 MW of new renewable energy capacity has achieved commercial operation under the RPS program since it was launched in 2008. More than 300 MW of new renewable capacity came online in the first two quarters of 2012, and another 2,740 MW is scheduled to come online before the end of the year. The CPUC does not specify how much of that capacity is solar. … Source: California Public Utilities Commission; Summary: PHOTON
