First Solar halts work on Agua Caliente solar project

31.08.2012: Bloomberg reports that US thin-film module manufacturer First Solar Inc. has stopped installing solar modules at the 290 MW (AC) Agua Caliente power plant in Yuma County, Arizona because the project is ahead of schedule. The article reports that First Solar will not install any more modules at the site until next year in order to meet contractual milestones. In July, the California Independent System Operator confirmed that the first 220 MW (AC) of the project were on line, making the still incomplete project the world’s largest solar power plant in operation. The power plant relies on cadmium-telluride (CdTe) thin-film panels from First Solar. In DC terms, the 220 MW (AC) now energized is equal to approximately 264 to 308 MW, based on First Solar’s stated AC-DC conversion ratio of 1.2 to 1.4 for its projects. The $1.8 billion project, which is backed by a $967 million loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy, is jointly owned by NRG Energy Inc. (51%) and MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. (49%). Originally, Agua Caliente was not expected to come on line until 2014, as determined by a power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E). However, the project is now expected to be completed by the end of 2013. … Source: Bloomberg; Summary: PHOTON
