SolarCity net loss balloons despite revenue growth
Solarcity installed 870 MW of residential PV capacity in 2015.
11.02.2016: US-based solar installer SolarCity Corp. significantly widened its losses in 2015 despite increasing its annual revenue. SolarCity achieved revenue of $399.6 million for full year 2015, up 56.7% from $255.0 million for the previous year. However, the company’s net loss grew from $375.2 million in 2014 to $768.8 million in 2015. The operating loss also increased year-on-year from $335.5 million to $647.7 million. During the past year, SolarCity deployed 870 MW of PV capacity, a 73% increase from 504 MW in 2014. The company’s cumulative installed PV capacity had reached 1,742 NW at the end of 2015. In the fourth quarter of last year, the company registered revenue of $115 million, up 61% from the same period of the prior year. The operating loss, however, increased year-on-year from $119.9 million to $198.5 million. The net loss for the period, meanwhile, was $231.8 million, down from a loss of 141.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2014. The company installed 272 MW of PV systems in the quarter, up 54% year on year. Furthermore, Solarcity said that cost per W declined to a new low of $2.71 in the latest quarter. Looking forward, SolarCity said it expects to deploy approximately 1.25 GW of PV capacity in 2016. For the first quarter of 2016, the company is targeting to install 180 MW. © PHOTON
