El Salvador launches new auction for 100 MW of solar
11.02.2016: Salvadorean energy distribution company DelSur has launched a new auction for the installation of PV power plants with a combined capacity of 100 MW and wind projects totaling 50 MW. The auction will begin on May 5, 2016 and will be concluded on Sep. 7, 2016. Selected projects will secure a 20-year PPA with local distribution companies. Wind power plants must begin delivering power on Feb. 1, 2019, while PV installations must be connected to the local grid on Feb. 1, 2020. In the renewable energy auction held in late 2014, the Salvadorean government signed PPAs for four PV projects with a combined capacity of 94 MW. For the auction, DelSur reviewed 30 proposals for solar power projects and 2 for wind power projects. DelSur had set a price cap of $165.53 per kWh for solar energy projects and of $123.41 per kWh for wind power projects. No wind project was ultimately selected through the auction, however. El Salvador reached an installed PV capacity of approximately 30 MW at the end of 2015, according to local newspaper elsalvador.com citing a statement from Óscar Funes Engelhard, the president of local renewable energy association ASER. © PHOTON
