US big box retail stores have strong potential for solar, Environment America
19.02.2016: The US has more than 102,000 »big box« retail stores, supercenters, large grocery stores and malls with rooftop space that could host PV systems, according to a report from the US Environment America Research & Policy Center. The organization believes that the rooftops of these stores and shopping centers have the potential to host 62.3 GW of PV capacity and to offset the annual electricity use of these buildings by 42%. Furthermore, said that the10 big box companies with the largest amount of retail space in the US – Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sears Holdings, Macy’s, J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, Costco, and TJX - have enough surfaces to host 17 GW of PV capacity. The number of US companies that are using solar to meet their business goals is increasing constantly, according to the report »Solar Means Business 2015« released by the US Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) in December. US-based retail corporation Walmart Stores, Inc. is currently the company with the largest amount of solar capacity thanks to 348 operational PV systems. These systems had a combined capacity of 142 MW at the end of December 2015. »While solar has long been viewed as an environmentally responsible energy choice, businesses now deploy solar because it is a smart fiscal choice as well,« stressed SEIA in the report. © PHOTON
