Barbados to borrow $250 million from IDB to reduce dependence on fossil fuels

08.05.2012: During a keynote speech at the three-day Sustainable Energy For All conference being held in Barbados, the prime minister of Barbados, Freundel Stuart, said the government planned to borrow $250 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to help the country modernize its energy sector. According to local news source the Nation, the loans will be used to finance renewable energy and energy efficiency projects throughout the country. The new power projects and energy efficiency upgrades are intended to help the country wean itself off expensive imported oil, which cost the country six percent of its GDP last year.
