Small island nations meet to discuss how to replace fossil fuels with renewables

29.05.2012: The world’s 39 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) met earlier this month in Barbados to discuss how energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies could help them reduce their dependence on expensive fossil fuel imports. AlertNet reports that many of these small island nation’s are already on their way to energy independence: Tonga and Tokelau plan to become fully energy independent this year, while Tuvalu and the Cook Islands aim to produce all of their own energy by 2020. At the meeting, Barbados pledged to get 29 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2029, and the Maldives set a goal of making its energy sector carbon neutral by 2020. According to AlertNet, fossil fuel imports cost some small island states as much as 30 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) – by deploying more hydro, solar, wind, biomass and geothermal energy, these nations could free up a significant portion of their GDP. … Source: Reuters AlertNet; Summary: PHOTON
