24.05.2012: China’s Ministry of Commerce has accused the US of providing renewable energy companies with “unfair” government grants that are prohibited under World Trade Organization rules, according to news agency Xinhua. The ministry claims that six renewable energy programs that support wind, solar and hydroelectric energy in five US states violate the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The investigation into US support policies was launched last November, around the same time the US began its investigation into Chinese solar cell and module imports. The six state-level programs identified by the ministry support renewables in Washington, Massachusetts, Ohio, New Jersey and California. In response to the announcement, the US Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the China Renewable Energy Industries Association have called on the US and China to resolve the trade conflict through negotiation before it escalates further.
