Shift to renewables will cost Germany at least €30 billion, German federal net agency says

19.03.2012: Germany's federal network agency estimates that it will cost between €30 and €47.5 billion ($40 and $64 billion) to upgrade Germany's electricity grid to accommodate the country's shift from nuclear power to renewables. A spokesman for the agency told PHOTON that according to its calculations, electricity costs for the average German household will increase by five to seven percent due to the grid upgrade. The agency estimates that due to a strong increase in the number of installed photovoltaic systems, an additional €200 million will need to be spent on inverters to help stabilize the grid. Germany wants to shut down all of its nuclear power plants by 2022 and wants to increase the share of renewables in the country's electricity mix to 35 percent by 2020 and 50 percent by 2030. … Source: PHOTON, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung; Summary: PHOTON
