Brazilan Senate debates bill to introduce tax exemptions for PV

20.11.2014: The Brazilian Senate Committee on Economic Affairs has begun discussing PLS 317 / 2013, a senate bill that would exempt individuals and companies that install solar thermal or PV systems from having to pay the IPI (Imposto sobre a Importação) import tax on solar components acquired for their projects. The proposal has already been approved by the Senate Committee for Infrastructure. The Brazilian Parliament is also discussing a bill that would introduce tax breaks for PV and wind power projects. Senate bill 5539 / 2013, submitted by the deputy and former governor of the state of Mato Grosso, Júlio Campos, would exempt PV and wind project developers from paying the federal VAT (IPI) and the import tax (II) on components used for their generation projects. The proposed law is set to be reviewed by Parliament’s energy and finance committees. The Brazilian government currently grants grid-fee exemptions for PV power plants up to 30 MW. © PHOTON
