Yingli achieves positive operating result for the first time since Q2 2011

Yingli expects to ship 3.30 to 3.35 GW of PV modules in full year 2014.

26.11.2014: Chinese solar manufacturer Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd. successfully reduced its losses in the third quarter of 2014 despite recording a drop in revenue. Revenue for the latest quarter came to 3,385.2 million CNY ($550.9 million), with the majority of total revenue, 3,180.8 million CNY, coming from the sale of PV modules. Yingli recorded total revenue of 3,649.4 CNY for the third quarter of 2013. Total PV module shipments during the latest quarter came to 903.4 MW, including 109.0 MW for PV systems used in the company's own downstream power plants in China. Revenue was not recognized for the 109.0 MW of internal shipments. Gross margin was 20.9% in the third quarter of 2014, substantially improved from 15.6% in the second quarter of 2014 and 13.7% in the third quarter of 2013. The significant increase of gross margin was primarily due to the decreased cost of PV modules as a result of the company's efforts to reduce production costs for all stages of module manufacturing. Operating income for the latest quarter was 199.7 million CNY, a significant improvement over the 70.3 million CNY loss Yingli recorded for the third quarter of 2013. Net loss was reduced to 122.8 million CNY from a loss of 235.6 million CNY a year earlier. Yingli CEO Liansheng Miao noted that operating income for the third quarter of 2014 was positive for the first time since the second quarter of 2011. Yingli has revised its module shipment target for full year 2014. The company now expects 2014 shipments in the range of 3.30 to 3.35 GW (including 200 to 240 MW for PV systems), which represents an increase of 3.0% to 4.6% compared to fiscal year 2013. Yingli has been expanding into the development business in recent quarters. The company's PV project pipeline currently stands at about 1.4 GW. These projects are at various stages in the approval process and are located across a dozen provinces in China. During the third quarter, the company started construction on approximately 185 MW of PV projects, and as of Sept. 30, the company had 340 MW of projects under construction. In the fourth quarter, the company plans to start constructions on 50 to 60 MW of additional PV projects. © PHOTON

Emerging economies will drive solar growth in the coming years, GlobalData
26.11.2014: Global cumulative installed PV capacity will more than treble from 135.66 GW in 2013 to 413.98 GW by 2020, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData. The company's latest report finds that emerging economies in the Asia-Pacific region, South and Central America and the Middle East and Africa are expected to be the major markets in the future due to an increasing focus on renewable energy proliferation to fuel economic growth. Swati Singh, GlobalData analyst covering power, explains: »Asia-Pacific is home to many developing countries, including India and China, where substantial installations are being made. The region is also a leading area for solar energy systems production, with Japan, China and Taiwan being three of the largest solar PV cell manufacturers in the world. Governments in the region are promoting solar module manufacturing through various long-term policies, financial incentives, subsidies and tax benefits. This strong commitment to solar energy development has led to numerous research and development initiatives and increased solar module production and installations, which will drive future market growth.« © PHOTON

Big Sun provides Xinjiang TBEA with trackers for 100 MW Chinese solar project
26.11.2014: Taiwan-based solar cell and tracker manufacturer Big Sun Energy Technology Inc. will supply its iPV Solar Trackers for a 100 MW PV project being built in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region by Chinese state-owned EPC contractor TBEA Xinjiang New Energy Co. Ltd. The first batch of iPV Solar Trackers has been delivered, and installation is scheduled to be completed toward the end of November 2014. TBEA Xinjiang is building the $200 million Willow Springs Farm PV Project in Awat County for regional government agency Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps 13th Division. Construction of the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Big Sun notes that its tracker technology was selected because of its ability to withstand extreme climate and environmental challenges: Awat County's high altitude terrain experiences heavy sandstorms, abundant snow and wide temperature variances. © PHOTON

European Commission approves German aid scheme for renewable energy; orders partial payback
26.11.2014: Following an in-depth investigation, the European Commission has concluded that aid granted for the production of energy from renewable energy sources under the German Renewable Energy Act of 2012 (EEG) was in line with EU state aid rules. The Commission has also approved the majority of reductions granted to energy-intensive companies on a surcharge to finance the support for renewables. This surcharge was imposed on electricity suppliers and passed on to end consumers (EEG-surcharge). However, a limited portion of the reductions for energy-intensive companies exceeded what is permitted under EU state aid rules. The beneficiaries now have to pay this excess back to remedy the distortion of competition. The recovery only concerns 2013 and 2014. Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said: »I want to strike a balance between several needs: to promote renewable energy and ensure its stable financing. At the same time we need to make sure that contribution by SMEs and consumers is fair, and that we protect the competitiveness of European industry. Today's decision achieves this.« © PHOTON

26.11.2014: Italy's Ministry of Economic Development (MiSE) revealed that three separate entities have expressed interest in acquiring Italian module maker Solsonica SpA, a subsidiary of semiconductor manufacturer EEMS Italia SpA. The ministry, however, said that none of the potential investors has presented a formal industrial plan for the company following a takeover, and it stressed that it would only evaluate offers for the company after it had all necessary documentation, including an industrial plan. In its financial results for the first half of 2014, Solsoncia said that a failed agreement with its lenders had prevented the company from reaching higher production volumes and sales. The company has been looking for a strategic partner in recent months in order to maintain its business operations. © PHOTON

Fraunhofer CSE unveils new plug and play PV system in Massachusetts
26.11.2014: The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) successfully completed the first public installation and interconnection of its Plug and Play PV System, a residential rooftop PV system designed to be easy to use and install in order to encourage the adoption of rooftop solar. The full-scale installation and commissioning of the PV system was done in just one hour. The demonstration installation was installed in Massachusetts. Funded by the US Department of Energy's SunShot Initative, the Plug and Play System is a holistic approach to residential PV that, according to CSE, will help reduce the total installed costs of solar electricity to $1.50 per W by 2020 from roughly $4.00 per W today. Incorporating innovative technologies with a PV system architecture that simplifies interconnection, permitting and inspection, Fraunhofer CSE developed a system design that addresses all aspects of the solar purchasing and installation process. »What is particularly unique about this project is that it doesn't just stop at technology development but is a comprehensive approach, including integration with the utilities and jurisdictions,« said Christian Hoepfner, center director of Fraunhofer CSE and principal investigator on the Plug and Play PV project. Fraunhofer CSE has been working closely with a number of commercialization partners and other stakeholders, including the City of Boston, local Massachusetts jurisdictions and New England utilities Northeast Utilities, National Grid and Green Mountain Power. The project's next focus will be on the demonstration of a commercial-ready system in 2015. © PHOTON
