21.11.2014: Peru’s Minister of Energy and Mines Jorge Merino has presented the country’s energy plan for the period 2014-2025. The plan is intended to create the conditions for a competitive and sustainable energy supply system, the minister said in a press release. The plan aims to take advantage of the country's natural gas and hydroelectric resources and to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. As for renewable energies, the minister said it aims to double installed hydropower capacity by 2020. The minister did not mention if solar or other renewable energy technologies would play a role in the country's energy plan. Peru's Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining recently awarded local power provider Ergon Peru SAC a 15-year contract to deliver solar electricity to households in remote, off-gird communities across the country. The company, which won the contract through a bidding process, will ultimately install, operate and maintain 500,000 stand-alone PV systems under the contract. The agency does not say when the PV systems will be installed. In July 2013, Peru’s Minister of Energy and Mines Jorge Merino launched the National Photovoltaic Household Electrification initiative, a $200 million program aimed at providing 2 million poor households in Peru with PV systems. The program aims to ensure that 95% of Peruvians have access to electricity by the end of 2016. © PHOTON
