06.03.2015: Starting from April, Costa Rica’s homeowners will be allowed to connect their PV systems to the country’s electricity and to sell the electricity output they not self-consume to the grid, according to local newspaper Nación, which cites two separate statements from Dennis Melendezs, the head of the Regulatory Authority for Public Services (Aresep), and the environment and energy minister Èdgar Gutierrez. The government has not decided yet the rate at which PV system operators will sell the electricity surplus to the grid. The government, however, has also decided to charge PV system owners with an interconnection fee and a monthly fee. In May, Aresep announced that, during a transitional phase, special tariffs granted to hydroelectric power projects will also be applied to PV and biomass projects with a power of up to 20 MW. The measure, which is now in effect, aims to encourage investments in renewable energy projects in the country. The special tariffs granted to hydroelectric installations, which were issued in 2012, range from $0.0798 to $0.1363 per kWh, depending on several factors including project location and demand. © PHOTON |
