Brazil tax break for PV

06.03.2015: Brazilian Minister of Energy and Mines Eduardo Braga announced that the government is planning to exempt revenue generated by distributed generation PV projects developed in the country from the ICMS, the Brazilian state sales tax. According to the minister, this tax break could encourage enterprises and homeowners to invest in solar power systems and to reduce their energy bills. The ministry, however, has not given a time frame for the introduction of the fiscal exemption. The Brazilian Parliament is currently discussing several bills aimed at introducing fiscal breaks for solar energy. The bill PLS 8322/14, which intends to exempt the imports of PV components from have from having to pay the IPI (Imposto sobre a Importação) import tax, the bill PLS 317 / 2013, which was approved by the Senate’s Committee on Economic Affairs in November 2014, and would also exempt individuals and companies that install solar thermal or PV systems from having to pay the IPI on solar components acquired for their projects. Moreover, the Parliament is examining the bill 5539 / 2013, which submitted by the deputy and former governor of the state of Mato Grosso, Júlio Campos, and would exempt PV and wind project developers from paying the federal VAT (IPI) and the import tax (II) on components used for their generation projects. © PHOTON
