31.05.2012: Japanese electronics manufacturer Sharp Corp. announced that its concentrator triple-junction compound solar cell achieved a conversion efficiency of 43.5 percent at a concentration of 306 suns. Independent German research institute Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy (ISE) confirmed the results. Last spring, US company Solar Junction announced that its commercially ready concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) solar cell achieved an efficiency of 43.5 percent at a concentration of more than 400 suns. According to Sharp Solar, these two solar cells share the honor of having the world’s highest solar cell conversion efficiency.
