07.01.2015: All but one of the 31 PV projects selected in Brazil's reserve energy auction held on Oct. 31, 2014 will rely on multicrystalline modules, according to a report released by the Brazilian Energy Agency (EPE), part of Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, which conducted the auction. The other selected project will use monocrystalline modules, while none will mount thin-film modules. EPE also revealed that 90% of the selected projects will rely on modules with a power range of 290 to 310 W and an efficiency of over 15.3%, while the inverters will have a power range of 500 to 1,665 kW. Moreover, EPE revealed that the cost of these projects will range from 3,400 BRL ($1,256) to 5,100 BRL per kW installed and that they will require a total investment of 4.1 billion BRL. The auction ended with an average price of 215.12 BRL per MWh and a range from 200.82 BRL to 220.80 BRL per MWh. The auction's starting maximum price for solar projects was 262.0 BRL per MWh. Providing a comparison with the prices for similar auctions registered in other countries, EPE concluded that the prices for solar projects reached through the reserve energy auction are among »the lowest in the world.« EPE selected 31 PV projects with a combined capacity of 889.7 MW through the auction. The agency had accepted 400 preliminary applications for PV power projects totaling 10.7 GW. EPE also selected 31 wind power projects with a combined capacity of 769.1 MW. EPE received 626 preliminary applications for wind power projects representing 15.3 GW. None of the eight proposals for biogas power projects totaling 151 MW were selected. EPE accepted preliminary project proposals totaling 26.2 GW. Projects selected in the auction, which must begin delivering power in October 2017, will sell their electricity output to the Brazilian grid under a 20-year PPA. The projects will be developed in the Brazilian states of Paraíba, São Paulo, Bahia, Goiás, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco and Piauí. © PHOTON
