STATE ENERGY DATA RELEASE—March 7, 2014
State-level estimates of coal consumption, prices, and expenditures for 2012
State-level estimates for coal, for data year 2012, are available at SEDS Updates. Data highlights include the following:
- U.S. consumption of coal fell from 20 quadrillion Btu in 2011 to 17 quadrillion Btu in 2012, a 12-percent decrease. Electric power sector consumption accounted for 91 percent of total consumption in 2012. The top consuming states were Texas, Indiana, and Pennsylvania.
- The price of coal averaged $2.60 per million Btu in the United States in 2012, a 1-percent increase from 2011. Prices ranged from $1.48 per million Btu in Wyoming to $4.69 per million Btu in Maine.
- U.S. coal expenditures fell from $50.4 billion in 2011 to $45.2 billion in 2012, a 10-percent decrease.
The latest 2012 estimates are incorporated into the time-series data files in the Data Files section of the SEDS Updates page.
SEDS provides annual state-level estimates of energy production, consumption, prices, and expenditures by sector and energy source. The 2012 SEDS reports, which contain summary tables comparing estimates across states and time-series tables for each state, as well as a full set of SEDS data files, will be released in June 2014.
