Mexican utility CFE to partner with private companies to boost renewable energy deployment

Mexican utility CFE to partner with private companies to boost renewable energy deployment
11.03.2014: Mexico’s state-owned electric utility the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) plans to form strategic partnerships with private companies to promote the construction of renewable energy projects across Mexico. CFE General Director Enrique Ochoa Reza announced the utility's intentions during a commissioning ceremony for a 30 MW PV power plant installed in La Paz, Baja California Sud. Reza said that CFE, as a state-owned company, must improve its processes to optimize financial and economic viability of renewable energy projects. The general director also said that CFE is interested in cooperating with Gauss Energía, the company that installed the PV plant in La Paz, to develop more renewable energy projects in the state of Baja California Sud, with no further details provided. The newly commissioned 30 MW Aura Solar I PV power plant required an investment of $100 million. Gauss Energía invested $25 million of its own funds in the project, while the remaining funds came from financing agreements with the Mexican development bank NAFINSA ($50 million) and the International Finance Corp., part of the World Bank Group ($25 million). Portuguese solar developer Martifer Solar provided EPC services for the project, while Chinese solar manufacturer Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. supplied the modules. The project’s output will be sold to CFE under a long-term agreement. © PHOTON
