Walmart challenges SDG&E's proposed “network use charge”

30.11.2011: The world’s largest retailer Walmart has filed a petition with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) challenging California utility San Diego Gas & Electric’s (SDG&E) proposed “network use charge,” according to SignOnDiego. SDG&E argues that electricity customers who have grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) installations are not paying their fair share for the upkeep of electrical infrastructure. The utility says that these customers should pay a fee to use the grid since by exporting energy during the day and importing energy at night they are using the grid like a storage device. Earlier in the month, a coalition of 10 water, school and utility districts asked the CPUC to intervene, questioning the legality and fairness of SDG&E’s proposed changes. In September, Walmart announced that it was expanding its rooftop PV program to include 75 percent of its California locations.
