The news gets worse here: The country is starting to see a rising death toll, driven in large part by the Midwest and some hot spots such as El Paso, Texas. Without those, the national fatalities trend is barely beginning to steepen, suggesting we haven't yet seen the outcomes of the broader upswing in cases.
Despite all of that, stocks rallied, with the S&P hitting an all-time high.
