TATA BP SOLAR LOOKS TO EXPAND OVERSEAS MARKET PRESENCE

Unfazed by plans of its JV partner BP exiting the solar business gradually,
India-based Tata BP Solar is looking to bolster its overall profitability
such as by expanding its overseas market presence.
The entity, a leading solar power solutions provider, is a joint venture
between Tata Power Company (BSE:500400) and British giant BP Solar.
"Going forward, the company is looking to grow with profitability, with the
right dose of manufacturing and increased focus on market research," Tata BP
Solar CEO K Subramanya said.
As per its website, Tata BP Solar's sales stood at Rs 906 crore (US$171
million) in 2010-11.
Without divulging specific details, he said the company is "also looking at
increasing its overseas market presence".
Solar businesses are grappling with tough times, especially in the wake of
global economic slowdown resulting in lesser demand.
Presently, the company has representatives in various countries including
Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
BP has decided to exit solar business in next 40 years.
Against this backdrop, Tata BP Solar earlier this week said it is not
impacted by the decision.
Tata BP Solar has a 125 MW solar module manufacturing capacity.
According to Subramanya, the aim is to first completely utilise the
manufacturing capacity of 125 MW. At present, around 80 MW capacity is being
utilised.
"The company is implementing solar projects in different states, including
Gujarat, Rajasthan and Jharkhand," he said.
Tata BP Solar is into solar cells manufacturing, module assembly and balance
of systems, among others.
