President Trump signed new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, imposing a 25% tariff on foreign steel and a 10% tariff on foreign aluminum.
But in a shift from recent plans, Trump will exempt Canada and Mexico from the tariffs and allow other US allies to petition for similar exemptions.
Trump framed the decision as making good on a campaign promise. The move is widely expected to set off a trade war that he insists the US can win.
