Mexican solar association asks government to remove import duties on solar panels

14.10.2015: Mexican solar association Asolmex (Asociación Mexicana de Energía Solar Fotovoltaica) has asked the government to remove the 15% import duties that it has imposed this year on solar modules. According to local financial newspaper El Financiero, the association claims that the country’s tariff code did not include the solar modules until a few months ago and that, starting from 2015, several Mexican companies importing solar panels were asked to pay a 15% import duty. Customs authorities said that these products were recently reclassified as power generators, a category that is usually included in the tariff code. Asolmex said that the duties are putting at risk investments worth approximately $4 billion. Furthermore, the association stressed that the duties will make PV projects less competitive in the country’s first energy auction, which will be held in March and will select both conventional and renewable energy power projects. © PHOTON
