New Super-Capacitor Demonstrates Record Performance

04.12.2014: US PV materials provider BioSolar Inc. announced that its »low cost« energy storage supercapacitor has achieved a record performance. The company said that its supercapacitor has demonstrated »stability for over 50,000 charge-discharge cycles, which is more than 10 times better than ever reported.« The company has not said if this result was confirmed by a third entity. BioSolar has partnered with the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to develop a polymer-based supercapacitor technology that would reduce the costs of solar energy storage. The two entities jointly own the patent application for the supercapacitor technology. BioSolar states that while conventional supercapacitors are very expensive, its BioSuperCap technology can be developed at lower costs. This is because the technology is integrated into the front-end of battery banks, resulting in fewer batteries being used. © PHOTON
