Solar Junction's Commercial-Ready CPV Cell Achieves 41.4% Efficiency,
Confirms NREL; Only CPV cell supplier to advance to post-selection due
diligence in DOE Loan Guarantee ProgramBusiness WireFebruary 15, 2011 Solar
Junction, a developer of high efficiency multi-junction cells for the
concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) market, today announced another swift leap
forward in cell efficiency. Just one month after achieving 40.9 percent
efficiency, the Company has now reached 41.4 percent on a production cell;
both milestones have been validated by the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory (NREL). The significance of the advancement belies the speed at
which the Company is hitting efficiency milestones for a standard
commercial-ready production cell, moving the industry beyond champion cell
gains. Concurrently, the Company is on a short list of finalists chosen for
post-selection due diligence within the Department of Energy's (DOE) Loan
Guarantee Program (LGP). The grant would support the commissioning of Solar
Junction's high-volume, 250-MW capacity manufacturing facility co-located
with its headquarters in San Jose, California. Solar Junction expects to
begin shipping commercial cells this year."As the debate over PV versus CPV
continues, we contend that with double the efficiency of traditional
photovoltaics, the CPV sector is entering a high-growth period," said Jim
Weldon, CEO of Solar Junction. "These recent NREL results reflect our
continued commitment to efficiency gains and validate the advantages of our
A-SLAM(TM) technology for the CPV sector."Solar Junction's cell, which
incorporates the proprietary adjustable spectrum lattice-matched, A-SLAM(TM)
technology, accelerates the multi-junction cell annual efficiency increase
in a customer-integrable and commercial form factor. The company's cells
deliver market-leading efficiency both in a 5.5 mm x 5.5 mm aperture area
form factor, the dominant cell for CPV module manufacturers, as well as in a
variety of other larger and smaller sizes. The LGP post-selection due
diligence comes a year after Solar Junction announced receiving a PV
Incubator contract from the DOE. The efficiency gains of its solar cells
relate to the work as part of the Incubator subcontract with NREL. Once the
LGP post-selection due diligence process is complete, Solar Junction will
ramp its in-house manufacturing capacity to meet the needs of CPV module
manufacturers.About Solar JunctionSolar Junction is a manufacturer of high
efficiency III-V multi-junction solar cells based on lattice-matched 1eV

Analyzing the Emerging Technology of Concentrated Solar PowerM2
PressWIREFebruary 24, 2011 February 24, 2011 With the advent of
technology, a new generation of power plants has emerged. These power
plants, with concentrating solar power systems, use the sun as a heat
source. There are three main types of concentrating solar power systems:
parabolic-trough, dish/engine, and power tower. Concentrating solar power
systems utilizes concentrated solar radiation as a high temperature energy
source to produce electrical power and drive chemical reactions. These clean
energy technologies are advantageous for Sunbelt applications where direct
solar radiation is high. The first commercialized plants have been in
operation in California since the mid-1980s, providing the 354 megawatts of
the world's lowest-cost solar power. There are many types of systems being
developed for different markets and these vary according to the
concentration devices, energy conversion methods, storage options and other
design variables. Much attention is centered on the multi-megawatt systems
that are appropriate for the on-grid market, complementing the other major
solar technology, photovoltaics, most appropriate for smaller, off-grid
applications. Concentrating solar power's relatively low cost and ability
to deliver power during periods of peak demand - when and where it's needed
- means that it can be a major contributor to the world's future needs for
distributed sources of energy. Aruvian's R'search analyzes the Emerging
Technology of Concentrated Solar Power. This research report is a
comprehensive analytical compilation which analyzes the basics of solar
power, the pros and cons of solar power, availability of solar power, and
the various uses of solar power. It is very necessary to understand the
basics of solar power in order to build on that knowledge and analyze
concentrated solar power. The section on concentrated solar power begins
with a historical analysis of concentrated solar power, the conversion of
solar heat into electricity (that is, the primary benefit of CSP), the
section further analyzes why concentrated solar power is necessary in
today's energy-hungry world. An analysis of the technology behind CSP
follows after this. The technologies analyzed in Aruvian's report include
Central Receiver/Solar Tower, Parabolic Troughs, and the Parabolic Dish.
Case studies of projects utilizing these technologies are included in the
report. CSP developments in various countries such as Australia, Algeria,
Egypt, India, Israel, South Africa, Spain, and the United States among
others, are analyzed in the research report. Industry barriers and
opportunities also are included. Aruvian's report Analyzing the Potential
of Concentrated Solar Power analyzes the leading 73 companies involved in
this industry. Major industry players such as Q-Cells, Solarwatt,
TerraSolar, Unisolar, GT Solar, Coolearth Solar, and many others are
analyzed. Summing up, the report concludes with an analysis of the various
projects going on in the industry, which are setting new standards for CSP
technology worldwide. Analyzing the Potential of Concentrated Solar Power is
a complete analysis of the lucrative technology called Concentrated Solar
Power. Table of Contents: A. Executive Summary B. Solar Power B.1 What

Fwd: PV materials costs breaking the silicon cycle - Photovoltaics World
PV materials costs breaking the silicon cycle February 17, 2011 - The cumulative market for PV materials excluding polysilicon will surge 50% over the next five years to top $12.8B, and will be approaching the cost of polysilicon feedstock for module manufacturers, says a new report from Greentech Media.A few highlights from the report:Costs falling faster. Total c-Si module material costs (see image below for the complete cell-to-frame list) will drop by 16% through 2014, says GTM Research. That's more than cumulative material costs for CdTe (9%) and CIGS (12%), and about even with a-Si (16%).c-Si isn't the driver. Not too long ago silicon cost $150/kg, so it made nearly three-quarters of total PV module materials costs; other materials costs for cells and modules were just 27% of total costs. Now with Si at around $40/kg, silicon only represents 53% of total costs, and other materials 47%. The case for paste. The cost of paste is going up due to dependence on metals (e.g. silver), but so is quality which increases cell conversion efficiency, and that means using less of it (gm/cell). Net result: paste cost in terms of $/Wp will actually decrease over time. Note that if anything, silver prices have risk to the upside, forecasted to top $25/lb.CIGS takes the thin-film wheel. Thin-film materials, a $1.5B market in 2010, will more than double to $3.1B by 2014 (a 19.5% CAGR). CdTe was the dominant factor in 2010, but CIGS production will now take over to drive this train -- CIGS materials will increase from $218M to $928M over that period. Total PV materials revenue share (crystalline silicon and thin-film), 2010–2014. Sharp To Buy Solar Project Developer Recurrent Energy For Up To $305 Million
In case anyone has forgotten the value of channels and pipeline. Although the Mann exercise should have left no doubt about the value of a project with queue and capacity in hand.
Recurrent Energy Secures 180 Mw Solar Module Supply For Feed-In Tariff Projects In Ontario, Canada. | ECN: Electronic Component News
Interesting development. Recurrent sold their pipeline development company to Sharp for up to $305M a short time ago (up to 305 because the pipeline will have to prove implementable at the modeled numbers). Now they have signed a contract manufacturing contract for panels in Ontario to get their installed costs down. I will predict that Sharp already has a stake in or option on Celestica.
FW: CSP vs PV: Is solar thermal gaining on photovoltaics? - Photovoltaics World
We are keeping our eye on this as it has the potential to drive system footprint down. The offset is that it requires a robust supply of water (produces steam) on a site free of environmental radicals.
