Texas cities focus on increasing solar power generation

September 5, 2014

Austin and San Antonio, Texas, are both focused on increasing their solar energy generation this year, according to PV Magazine.

Austin and San Antonio, Texas, are both focused on increasing their solar energy generation this year, according to PV Magazine.

Austin's city council has passed a resolution increasing its solar energy target to 700 megawatts, which will include 600 MW of utility-scale solar plants and 100 MW of local solar energy creation. Part of the resolution called for the city to replace a 36-year-old natural gas-fired power plant with the 600 MW of utility-scale solar power by 2017.

Additionally, the new regulation passed by the council changed the city's Residential Solar Tariff. The new program allows credits to roll over from one year to the next, removed the 20 kilowatt cap and more.

San Antonio has begun purchasing solar energy from a new utility-scale solar plant constructed and operated by OCI Solar Power just outside of the city in Brackettville, Texas. This solar installation, called Alamo 4 is one of three plants OCI is opening in Texas this year, and the output of 39 MW goes to San Antonio's community-owned utility company CPS Energy, according to ReNews.

OCI is currently working to complete the solar installation Alamo 3 located in San Antonio, and the companies expects the plant to be up and running by the end of the year.
