Nearly 47 MW PV power plant breaks ground in Sonora -- Mexico’s biggest under construction

10.08.2012: A subcontractor for developer Sonora Energy Group de Hermosillo, S.A. de C.V. (SEGH) has broken ground on a 46.8 MW (DC) photovoltaic power plant in Puerto Libertad, in the Mexican state of Sonora. Don Walter, president of SEGH, confirmed to PHOTON that early construction activities, such as site grading, were underway. The plant, which will rely on approximately 187,000 multicrystalline panels from Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd., is on track to come online in the second quarter of 2013, he said. The developer, which will own the project, has a 20-year power supply agreement with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). Walter estimated the installed cost at just $1,500 per kW. He said SEGH is considering adding storage to the plant, using either lithium-ion or zinc-bromide batteries. Known as “SEGH-CFE 1,” the system, Walter added, “is the first of several projects” the company plans to build in Mexico. The project is located near a 632 MW oil-fueled power station that CFE may close, potentially freeing up transmission capacity for future solar projects. Source: PHOTON
