Mainstream solar projects in Chile

162 MW PV project proposed in Chile, as solar pipeline nears 3 GW

22.05.2012: Andes Mainstream SpA, a subsidiary of Irish company Mainstream Renewable Power, is in the early stages of developing a 162 MW photovoltaic (PV) project in northern Chile’s Atacama Desert, near the town of Diego de Almagro in the province of Chañaral. According to documents published by Chile’s Environmental Impact Assessment Agency (SEIA) on May 22, the estimated $420 million project would rely on 519,000 polycrystalline solar modules from an unnamed supplier. This follows Mainstream’s proposal in December to build a 75 MW PV project in northern Chile. In total, solar power plant developers have applied to construct approximately 2,900 MW of PV and solar thermal electric projects in Chile. SEIA has approved 685 MW so far, but a 1 MW PV system supplied by Solarpack Corporación Tecnológica SL is currently the country’s only operational large-scale solar project. Most of the proposed projects are located in the Atacama Desert, where developers are seeking to supply mining companies in need of power. Chile is considering legislation to boost its share of renewable power – not including large-scale hydro – to 20 percent of its electricity mix by 2020. … Source: Chilean Environmental Impact Assessment Agency; Summary: PHOTON
