US Energy Secretary on the Future of Solar

Chu: Solar energy will be fully competitive within 10 years

27.10.2011: In an interview published in the French daily newspaper Le Monde, the US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu presented his forecasts for the energy sector at a meeting of the International Energy Agency in Paris. Asked whether solar energy will be of importance in the future despite the present turbulence in the sector, Chu stated that the price of the kWh produced from solar energy is likely to drop considerably by 2020. He added that solar energy should become “as competitive as other energy sources.” Furthermore, Chu insists that the United States will continue to play an important role in the future development of solar in spite of China’s current position as the “biggest producer, exporting nation and user on a global scale.” … Source: Le Monde, DOE; Translation and summary: PHOTON
